Dug Boogie has been a staple in Greenville, South Carolina’s upstate hip-hop scene since he got his first Technics 1200s in 1994. Three decades later, he’s still one of the most dedicated crate-diggers around, bringing that authentic boom-bap sound to stages across the Southeast.

He’s played everywhere from tiny local venues to bigger festivals in the Carolinas, opening for some respected names in underground hip-hop — El Da Sensei from the Artifacts, DJ Hush, Sadat X, Hakim Green, Dynas, Supastition, U George, and the Scienz of Life crew. Every collaboration sharpened his ear and deepened his respect for the culture.

Dug Boogie’s sound: dusty, soul-sampled drum breaks, crisp hi-hats, and vocal cuts that nod to hip-hop’s roots while keeping the energy moving forward. He runs Technics SL-1200MK2s through a Rane TTM-57SL, with a Pioneer DDJ-SZ for digital tracks and a Shure SM7B for live commentary on his Twitch streams. It’s a hybrid setup that lets him pull rare vinyl from his crates and blend it into his productions.

He got hooked on boom-bap from the mid-90s — DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor, Alchemist. Those producers showed him that hip-hop is about the break: finding the perfect sample, letting the drums breathe, never losing the groove. That philosophy shows in everything he does, whether it’s vinyl-only sets or his newer studio productions.

Now Dug Boogie is building The Hop Stew into something bigger. He’s making original tracks, putting together episodes for his Podomatic mixshow, and streaming live every week on Twitch from his home studio in Greenville. Pull up a chair and feel the rhythm.
